Our drop point is by a local
farmhouse that offers wine tasting. We can ignore it or take
advantage of it! :-) The walk is a mild ascent through vineyards. All of a
sudden the 14 towers of the town of San Gimignano appear in front of our
eyes. The view is simply breathtaking.
We soon arrive in San Gimignano where we can have a light lunch. The
highlight of the local cuisine is zafferano (saffron). San Gimignano built its
fortune on trade of this yellow spice. A local Vernaccia wine would be a perfect
compliment. Or you
may decide to have a panino (sandwich) with local prosciutto di cinta (ham)
instead.
Lunch flies by. It's time already to stand up and stroll around town. San Gimignano is
an intricate net of alleys and byways best visited while carrying a delicious
gelato cone. Did you know that the Gelateria in San Gimignano won
the Gelato World Championship? Take pictures and people back home will envy you
to no end!
And if we make a late day of it and wait until the crowds of visitors
have left, we might imagine ourselves making our way through a medieval
town surrounded by the murmurs of the Etruscans and Romans, the Lombards
and the Franks who all lived here in the past. A transcendent
experience for those with a passion for architecture and history.
