Description of the day
It is said
that Venus of the Tyrrhenian sea, while emerging from the water to hug the
horizon, let seven pearls from her necklace slip. They were transformed
into the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Elba Island is the biggest.
Its red
soil is rich in iron minerals that give the landscape a uniquely warm
appearance. The Etruscans and the Romans exploited the island, because of
its rich iron ores. The island is full of more recent history: Napoleon was
exiled here and spent about one year on the island.
Our day
starts in Capoliveri, a picturesque town with nice shops and small
alimentari (grocery stores). Here you can shop for the local dessert
wine, ansonica.
We will
soon reach the trailhead. It is a mild ascent through a pine forest. We are
quite high above see level and we get magnificent views over the sea. Other
islands of the Tuscan Archipelago are easily visible from this trail.
The
morning walk ends in a fantastic spot with a relaxing restaurant located
under the umbrella pines that has a lot of local seafood specialties:
calamari, scampi and clams pasta.
In the
afternoon we transfer to Portoferraio. It's the biggest town on the island.
We can take a walk leading to the Napoleon's Villa to learn about the story
of the exile.
(It is worth to stay on Elba Island at least 3
days. This is just the description of one out of many possible
excursions on Elba Island.
