Description of the day

We start the day in the alimentari (grocery store) buying the makings for our picnic lunch. You can't imagine how many varieties of cold cuts and cheeses you can fill your sandwich with. Then a short transfer to Ponte a Bozzone, one of the gates to Chianti. The trail is on a typical Tuscan dirt road. As soon as the trail gently rises, a wonderful panorama appears. Our first stop is by the Villa di Monaciano which we can visit from the outside. The building is a good example of a typical farming village, where a number of families lived, until the fifties, that is, when the countryside was abandoned.
Vineyards, cypress trees, old farmhouses and a striking view on Siena is what surrounds us for most of the walk. Some olive groves lead us to Certosa di Pontignano, a monastery that today belongs to the University of Siena. After we visit the loggia it's time to unwrap our lunch. How nice to enjoy it under the shade of an olive tree!
The afternoon part is easy, as the walk back to the bus stop is all downhill. As a reward we can stop at a local wine bar for a wine tasting where you can taste the famous local wines and learn about their history.
