The Monteriggioni
walk
  "In the pilgrims' footsteps"

The area at a glance

Monteriggioni, a former outpost of the Sienese against the Florentines, is on the Pilgrims' route leading from Canterbury to Rome. The trail overlooks abbeys, churches and castles stepping from woods and open fields.
Let's enjoy a relaxing morning walk in this area ending up in Monteriggioni for a light lunch.
Traditional food here is in accordance with the pilgrim’s diet: inexpensive but nourishing. Let’s taste together the ribollita soup (re-cooked). It needs to be prepared the day before; slow cooking is the secret of this hearty vegetable delicacy. Don’t forget we are in the red Tuscan wine area. What a perfect combination to the soup!

The Crete
Senesi walk

The area at a glance

Creta
means clay. This is one of the wildest area in the Siena vicinity. The wild looks of the Crete Senesi is because this country was abandoned during economic boom of  the sixties in Italy. Farmers migrated to the northern Italy to work for heavy industry. Fortunately the area was repopulated by some Sardinian farmers and their sheep herds. The cacio pecorino (sheep cheese) is a delicacy that you don't want to miss.
This walk is a 4 hours loop with gentle ascents.
